A brief History The College of Education, Oju was established as far back as 1981 on the premise of the old Government Teacher’s College Oju, alongside that of Makurdi by the civilian administration of the Late Governor Aper Aku. The maiden name was Advanced Teacher’s College, Oju, with Dr. Isaac O.A Ella as its pioneering principal. At the dawn of military regime that marked the end of the Second Republic, these two new colleges were ‘axed’ out. Precisely, this took in 1985, under Brigadier John Atom Kpera. At that time Benue State had four Advanced Teachers’ Colleges located at Katsina-Ala, Ankpa, Makurdi and Oju. However, following the creation of Kogi State out of Benue State in 1991, only one College of Education – that located in Katsina-Ala, was left in Benue State. Since the National Policy on Education prescribed that NCE should be the minimum entry qualification into the teaching profession in Nigeria, and realizing that Colleges of Education could provide the needed manpower to meet up this increased demand, His Excellency, Lt. Col. Attahiru Makka, Military Governor of Benue State, re-opened the college in an announcement made in December 1991. He left the scene shortly in January 1992, handing over the mantle of leadership to Late Rev. Father Moses O. Adasu. It was Adasu, therefore, who did actual reactivation and upgrading of the status of the college. In February 1992 Mr. J.A. Aja became its first provost. Following the death of Mr. Aja, Dr. Peter Ogbu Agogo was appointed the second provost, and on his appointment as Benue State Commissioner for Education in 2005, the mantle fell on Mr. Daniel A Okwoche. |
